Evil Meanies and Soft Hearted Weenies

April 19th, 2010 Posted in Uncategorized

I did not vote in the last election.

I could not come to grips with either Party’s agenda.

Our government, for better or worse, is a two party system. Democrat or  Republican, pull the lever, and cast your vote.

I could not decide.  The republican party as every democrat knows, consist of gun toting Christians who don’t believe in evolution, don’t allow abortions, and are always trying to “stick it to the little guy.”  The democrats, as every republican will attest, are a bunch of soft minded do-gooders, who want to burn the flag, and rob the rich to give it to the poor.

Now suppose, I am a citizen, who believes in evolution. Thinks that guns should only be permitted on hunting reservations. A citizen who believes that the abortion question is an individual’s decision, and if a woman needs an abortion, then it is her choice to get one, and a doctor’s choice to perform the procedure, not the Government’s. I want small Government, that won’t tax me too much. I can take care of myself and will be responsible for me and my family.  Who should I vote for?

The Republican Party with its Right wing connection, is a bit scary. The separation of Church and State has always been a big issue for me, probably because I am not Christian. So it is a bit scary to think that Christian Fundamentalists who want to teach creationism in our schools, outlaw abortions, and consult God in their day to day decision making, are supporters of the Republican party.

The Democrats are just as misguided. The Democrats want everyone to have everything and do not seem to understand the concept of cost. They act as if the Republicans are mean, and nasty old scrooges, who do not care if people are suffering. The Democrats in their silver armor on white steed will rescue us all,  regardless of the costs, because they would never let some little issue like a trillion dollar deficit stop them from taking care of their voters.

I do not fit in either party.  My economics education makes it impossible to vote for the Democrats. Their policies and goals are short sighted and far too over reaching.  The short term benefits will be overwhelmed by the longer term deficits. However, I also have studied ethics, and science at some length, and find it almost impossible to vote Republican. The Republican party can not be taken seriously if some of their most outspoken members do not believe in evolution.

Whether you are an EVIL MEANY Republican, or a Soft Hearted Weeny Democrat you are part of the problem. Government is a problem, not a solution. We form societies which allow us to cooperate with each other. Government is a necessary evil for societies. The rules must be made, and enforced for a civilization to exist. But the larger we make our governing body, the more money it requires.  The larger we make our Government the more inefficient our economy becomes, relative to other countries.  If we want to compete and succeed in the global economy, our government needs to be lean and efficient.  Reduce taxes on our businesses, and consumers.  Keep the costs of doing business low, and reward entrepreneurs who take personal risks and succeed.  Let Freedom ring, let us all pursue our own happiness.  No one promised us happiness, but we all have a chance. That is America. That has always been the key to our success.  Go out and try to find your dream, and do not hurt other citizens in the process.

If the Federal government is the problem why do you rely on it to take away guns except on hunting reservations? Any thinking person realises the creation of a law banning guns will not eliminate guns. Murder has been illegal for a long time yet it still occurs. This is why democracies fail. Everyone wants something from the Federal government. Before you know it the Federal government is trying to do everything.

I never said the governement should be responsible for taking away guns. The point was that I am not in favor of gun possesion for everyone. Guns are an extremely powerful and corruptive entity. My experience with guns has taught me many lessons. Most importantly, people who are armed often seek different methods for conflict resolution, than non armed citizens. Furthermore, the laws regarding gun ownership were written over 200 years ago by members of an agrarian society. To cling blindly to the idea that our founding fathers would be in favor of gun ownership for all is ridiculous. We are now an industrialized modern society, with a standing army. The need to bear arms is gone. However. I would never want to deny a citizen any pursuit, so we should provide for gun usage in some capacity.

  3. Texas Says:

There you go again. We, the Federal government, should provide for gun usage in some capacity(your gun issue is the healthcare issue for someone else). How about the simple right to defend yourself from a criminal with a gun? Since niether the police nor a standing army can protect me may I own a gun to protect myself in your world? The need to bear arms is gone? Really? You must live in a very sheltered world.

In your life, have you ever needed to use a gun in self-defense?

Do you consider yourself a trained professional, a marksmen if you will, highly experienced in intense combat situations to use a gun effectively? Or, are you one of those that believes 1-2 times per week at a gun range shooting at paper that doesn’t shoot back… getting your stance ready… holding your freshly cleaned and polished gun… getting your grip just right with your safety goggles and earphones on… is adequate training to point and shoot a lethal weapon at said criminal and not endanger those around you?

If there is a right to carry armed weaponry, it should carry substantial training requirements and certifications. It’s not like the movies where said criminal is holding loved one at knife point, and you save the day with a single head shot and instant death. More likely, you miss said criminal and kill wife, or child, or some innocent bystander.

Also, giving you the freedom to kill at will is against everything that is constitutional. In your hero situation where you save the day, you get to be judge, jury, and executor at your leisure. Would that make you feel safe if every citizen had that mentality?

This isn’t the wild west where you live day-to-day in uncivilized territories. This is amateur hour… citizen judging and executing citizen in the spirit of “self-defense.”

The constitution is pretty clear about the right to bear arms. It says nothing about you being able to use it for your version of “self-defense.” If you would like to bear arms, fine… bear them in a secure location so as not to be used because you want to kill people; “criminal” or otherwise.

  5. Texas Says:

Requiring people to get ‘substantial’ training(whatever that means) will not stop the criminals from carrying a weapon and they are the true amatuers you speak of. They have no training and on a regular basis make the grievous mistakes you want to assign to law abiding citizens. Most law abiding citizens who have guns have had some training unlike criminals.

I ask you the same question. Will a criminal in a your world have to think twice about attacking a law abiding citizen because they too could have a gun or will it be a ‘substantially’gun free zone where a criminal can be confident of overwhelming his/her victim with an illegal gun?

Your assumption that people who bear their guns outside of a secure location want to kill someone is a very strange type of paranoia. I’m pretty sure even most gun carrying criminals don’t want to kill people.

Please explain how having the freedom to kill is against everything that is constitutional. While you are at it please show me where the constitution says I don’t have a right to defend myself.

  6. YAZ Says:

The constitution of the United States was designed to be flexible. The founding fathers were very careful to write a document that could be amended.
Should citizens, in an advanced industrialized society, that has already outlawed hunting, be allowed to carry guns ? What purpose does a gun have ? Hunting, defense and entertainment. Many other nations have eliminated guns, and there is no evidence supporting a claim of an increase in crime, or more aggressive criminals. In fact gun deaths actually are lower in those nations.
When the Right to Bear Arms was first drafted, the British Army was on our soil, and the citizens were forced to defend themselves. There was no Army. Things have changed, and the rules need to be changed. Fortunately they already anticipated that…..

  7. Texas Says:

The fact of the Constitution being amendable is a far cry from declaring it flexible. The amendment process is very difficult and the founders wanted to be sure of a very high threshhold for amending the Constitution.

You are correct about other countries. The similarities with America are less clear. There are many intellectuals, especially in Europe, who belive the cycle of warrior to intellectual and back to warrior is broken. They are so sure they are starving their own national defenses. I would not want to bet anything on a premise that this time will be different. In a free society niether our armies or our police can protect us from attack from any determined individual all the time.

The right to bears arms became bacame part of the constitution in 1791,the result of a two year process, well after the last British troops left New York in 1783. The founders got the principle from Anglo-Saxon law and earlier systems that were in place long before the British were on our soil. The right of self defense is a timeless principle.

The main point I was trying to make is everyone(including you) wants something from the government. In the end the government can’t save you. Your gun control demand is someone else’s healthcare demand.
